If "beauty is only skin deep," then shouldn’t we be taking better care of our skin? We’ve mentioned before, the importance of using organic products on your skin – it’s your biggest organ after all. To use another catch phrase, starting with organic products is “just the tip of the iceberg.”
Ok, we’re done abusing catch phrases, and your patience, now.
Yes, it’s incredibly important to take care of your skin with all natural organic products. But what exactly does that mean? How do you create a skin routine that:
1). You actually follow, and 2). Works to keep your skin healthy and youthful?
While everyone’s skin is a bit different (oily, normal, dry, combos, etc.), we’ve created a basic skin regiment that you can make your own, to keep your skin healthy, youthful, and smooth.
Quick Guide to Creating the Perfect Skin Care Routine
Start From the Inside
Filling your diet with anti-oxidant rich food, lots of water, and avoiding overly processed, sugary, and greasy foods can have a dramatic affect on your skin. New research suggests, that diets high in refined carbohydrates (think sugar, white bread, etc) can cause breakouts and acne. Sub out sugary cravings with natural alternatives like fruit. Instead of soda, grab a glass of sparkling water. Small changes in your everyday diet can brighten dull skin and help eliminate blemishes.
Skin Type and Cleansing
Cleansing your skin helps remove excess dirt and oil, but not everyone needs to wash their face twice a day or even daily. Understand your skin type to discover which facial cleanser is best for you, and how often you should cleanse. All skin types should avoid facial cleansers with synthetic fragrance, alcohol, parabens, and sodium lauryl sulfate.
Most dermatologists suggest exfoliating your face once or twice a week. When choosing a facial scrub, make sure to select one without mirco-beads. Fragrance free and all natural are even better. Our organic coconut coffee scrub works as both a body scrub and facial scrub, and is friendly toward all skin types. Use it once a week on your face, and every other day on your body to assist with cell turnover, reducing the appearance of scarring, wrinkles, and cellulite, and to stimulate the skin.
Keeping your skin nourished and moisturized ensures the right balance of oil on the skin. Too much moisturizer, too little, or the wrong type for your skin type, causes problems like oil slicks, black heads, and over drying. Selecting the right moisturizer is similar to selecting the right facial cleanser, it's dependent on your skin type:
Dry Skin Types typically experience redness, itching, or tightness. Choose a gentle moisturizer packed with essential oils to help revitalize your skin.
Oily Skin Types often have larger pores with an oily sheen. Select a moisturizer that's oil free, and not too heavy.
Combo Skin Types experience oiliness on the T-Zone, and a bit of dryness in the cheek area. Can use an oil free moisturizer as well, and perhaps a heavier cream at night.
All skin types should avoid moisturizers with synthetic fragrance, alcohol, and parabens.
SPF It Up
There is no point in caring for your skin, and creating your own healthy skin routine, if you are just going to head into the sunshine and let your skin get hit with harmful UV rays. Slap some sunscreen on your face, everyday! Be sure to use organic, non-toxic, formulas to avoid damaging your skin with harmful chemicals.
